Vets4Pets is working in partnership with the RNLI in Wales to share advice with pet owners on how to stay safe when walking dogs along the Welsh coastline or near water. 

Sadly, more than 200 walkers have died around the UK coast since 2011, many when walking their dogs.

Vets4Pets and the RNLI want to educate pet owners to call 999 or 112 if their pet gets into trouble in the water, as they will only be risking their own life if they go in after them.

The coast is an exciting place to be for you and your dog - but it's easier than you think to get into trouble. Please remember:

• If you see someone else in trouble in the water, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.  
• If you're worried about your pet, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.   
• Always carry a mobile phone or other means of calling for help when walking your dog near water 
• Keep dogs on a lead if you're close to cliff edges or fast flowing rivers.  
• If your pet goes into the water or gets stuck in mud, do not go in after them.  Move to a place your dog can get to safely and call them to you using a treat or toy as a reward – They will probably get out by themselves.  
• If you find yourself unexpectedly in the water, float on your back to increase your chances of survival.
