Orthopaedics is the field of medicine and surgery that treats injury and disease of the musculoskeletal system, which includes the bones, joints,
ligaments, muscles and tendons of the body.

Orthopaedic surgery is commonly used for fracture repairs in cats and dogs.

Soft tissue surgery is a varied discipline and includes surgical procedures that do not fall under the remit of orthopaedic surgery.

Soft tissue surgery is surgery for pets when operating on parts of the body other than the nervous or musculoskeletal system.

It includes:

• Neutering
• Lump removal
• Exploratory surgery
• Laparoscopic spays
• Wound reconstruction

Laparoscopic surgery, otherwise known as keyhole surgery, is a minimally invasive abdominal surgery where small surgical incisions are made rather than the more common larger skin incision. Small cameras and fine instruments allow the veterinary surgeon to perform a range of procedures.

When is it used?

• Neutering of female dogs
• Biopsies
• Retained abdominal testicles
• Removal of cysts and fibroids
• Gastropexy (to prevent twisting of the stomach)

Ophthalmology diagnoses and treats conditions of the eyes and their associated structures.

Our veterinary ophthalmology service is available for a wide range of medical surgical conditions in small animals.

We can treat the following conditions: Third eyelid gland prolapse, Entropion, Ectropion, Keratotomy, Corneal graft, Electrolysis for distichiasis, Medial canthoplasty, Laceration repair, Aqueocentesis, Conjunctivectomy and retinal screening for onset of sudden blindness to the list of conditions.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses radio waves and magnets to form images of the body part being scanned.

Such imaging is used to assess the brain, spinal cord, soft tissues, joints and the eye sockets.

Your pet will need to be anaesthetised for this procedure as they need to be completely still during the examination.

Computed tomography (CT) scans provide us with detailed images of bones, organs and blood vessels.

We may recommend a CT scan included if your pet has an orthopaedic disease, neurological disease, or if we need to look at the chest of abdomen.

Ultrasound scanning allows examination of and identifies changes in your pets' internal organs. It is commonly used to assess organs in the abdomen such at the bladder, kidneys and liver. It can also be used to assess the heart.

Cardiology focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of conditions of the heart which may cause symptoms such as heart mumurs, irregular heartbeats, collapsing episodes and coughing.

Neurology is the area of medicine which investigates diseases of the brain and spinal cord (the central nervous system) the nerves outside of the central nervous system (peripheral nerves) and muscles.

Your pet may need to see a neurologist if they have a loss of limb function (paralysis), a loss of balance or if they have spinal pain, although there are many other symptoms of neurological disease.  

Physiotherapy aims to restore movement and function in those animals who have had an illness, surgery, injuries or have developmental problems. Examples where physiotherapy may be useful include osteoarthritis, muscle, tendon and ligament injuries and after orthopaedic surgery.  

After an initial assessment, several techniques may be used in your pet’s rehabilitation including movement and rehabilitation therapies, soft tissue manipulation and electrophysical therapies. Your pet will receive a personalised rehabilitation and exercise programme so that you can continue treatments at home between your appointments.  

Laser therapy is a non-invasive method which is used in conjunction with, or in place of medications that manage pain, inflammation and wound healing.  Therapeutic lasers use light waves that alter the physiology of cells and tissues which then promotes their growth and repair.

Laser therapy can be used after surgery to speed up wound healing and may reduce the need for pain relieving medications.

Furthermore, it can help with Wound healing, Bone and cartilage repair, Osteoarthritis, Ligament and tendon conditions, Nerve and spinal cord problems.

Hydrotherapy uses a water treadmill or pool for controlled, non-weightbearing movement, helping to reduce pressure on the joints and allowing a greater range of joint movement.  Regular sessions help to increase muscle mass, increases blood circulation, and improves overall strength, stamina and cardiovascular fitness.

Hydrotherapy can help with many conditions, including rehabilitation following fractures, ligament damage, and nerve related injuries. It can help achieve weight loss and increase fitness. Additionally, it can help where a dog is reluctant to use a limb or there is lack of strength and movement.
